National conference of blood transfusion specialists begins in Kochi

Kochi, Sept 17 (UNI) The 51st national conference of the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology (ISBTI), Transcon 26, began here on Thursday, bringing together around 1,000 doctors, nearly 300 postgraduate students and about 200 blood bank technicians from across the country and abroad.
A continuing medical education (CME) programme for doctors, organised as part of the four-day conference at the Kochi Lulu Marriott Hotel, was inaugurated by Dr Piyush M Namboothiripad, Director of the Kerala State AIDS Control Society. ISBTI National President Dr Yudhbir Singh presided over the function.
ISBTI State President Dr Sajith Vilambil, State Secretary Dr Shaiji PS and State Treasurer Dr Amitha R Nair also spoke.
Simultaneously, a series of workshops were conducted at eight centres across Ernakulam district, including Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Rajagiri Hospital and Actimos Lab.
The sessions were led by Dr Antonio Paul, Dr Veena Shenoy, Dr Linda John, Dr Nithya M Baiju, Dr Arun VJ, Dr Vinu Rajendran, Dr Angel Mary Sam, Dr Chithra James, Dr Rajesh R Chandran, Dr Archana KA, Dr Anjali PS and Dr Ashley Monson Mathew.
The main conference will be formally inaugurated at 1800 hours on Friday at the Chackolas Pavilion Convention Centre by Dr Mohanan Kunnummal, Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University of Health Sciences. Dr Yudhbir Singh will preside.
Senior doctors will be honoured at the inaugural ceremony, along with the presentation of various ISBTI awards.
The conference is being organised jointly by the Kerala Chapter of ISBTI and the Department of Transfusion Medicine, Government Medical College, Thrissur.
During the four-day conference, experts will present 20 scientific papers and 70 posters, while postgraduate students will present 30 papers and 130 posters. Panel discussions on various topics related to transfusion medicine and allied areas are also scheduled.
Around 50 exhibition stalls showcasing products and services related to different areas of healthcare have been arranged as part of the conference. Cultural programmes will also be held during the event.
The conference will conclude with a valedictory session at noon on Sunday.

Kozhikode, Sep 17 (UNI) The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Sultan Batheri on Thursday remanded Reporter TV Managing Director Anto Augustine to 14 days' of judicial custody following his arrest by the Kerala Excise Department in connection with a major illegal liquor storage case.
Anto Augustine was sent to 14 days of judicial custody after the Excise Special Investigation Team (SIT) presented him before the court.
