Hyderabad police chief warns against capturing, selling Telangana's state bird during Dussehra

Hyderabad, Oct 20 (UNI) Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar on Tuesday urged people not to capture, cage or sell Indian rollers, Telangana's state bird, during Dussehra celebrations in the name of auspiciousness.
In a post on social media platform X, Sajjanar said festivals should be occasions of joy, freedom and compassion towards all living beings. He expressed concern over reports of Indian rollers being caught, having their wings clipped, confined to cages and sold during the festivities.
Questioning the practice, he said depriving a speechless creature of its freedom and subjecting it to suffering without food or water could not bring prosperity or well-being to anyone.
Describing the Indian roller as a friend of farmers and a protector of the environment, Sajjanar said the bird added beauty to nature and dignity to society only when it could spread its wings and fly freely in the sky.
He warned that capturing, selling or displaying Indian rollers was an offence under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. He appealed to people not to encourage the display of caged birds and to protect wildlife during the festive season.
Sajjanar urged citizens to report any instances of Indian rollers being captured or caged by calling the toll-free numbers 18004255364 or 9803338666, or dialling 112. He called upon everyone to act responsibly and ensure that festivals remained occasions of compassion for all living beings.
