Telangana BC Commission highlights crisis in handloom sector, seeks urgent Govt intervention

Hyderabad, May 19 (UNI) The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes has submitted a proposal to BC Welfare Minister Sri Ponnam Prabhakar, highlighting the growing challenges faced by the handloom industry in the state.
The proposal, put forth by Commission Member Rapolu Jayaprakash, outlines a series of concerns affecting the livelihoods of handloom weavers.
In his report, Jayaprakash pointed to the declining budgetary allocations for the sector, rising manufacturing costs, and the lack of accessible credit from both government and organized financial institutions.
He expressed serious concern over the plight of handloom weavers, citing low wages, mounting production expenses, and limited access to affordable credit as critical issues. These hardships, he warned, are pushing many weavers into high-interest debt traps, worsening their financial distress.
Underlining the gravity of the situation, Jayaprakash called for immediate government measures to support and revive the handloom industry and protect the interests of weavers across the state.
Commission Chairman G Niranjan commended Jayaprakash for voicing the concerns of the handloom community and urged the government to act swiftly to address the challenges and ensure the welfare and development of the sector, a statement said on Monday.
