Pollution can cause hair dullness, breakage: Surya Basil CEO

Bengaluru, Nov 4 (UNI) Environmental pollution, including dust, smoke and fine particulate matter, can contribute to hair dullness, dryness, frizz and breakage, besides affecting scalp health, according to Clelia Cecilia Angelon, Founder and CEO of Surya Brasil.
In an advisory on the impact of pollution on hair, Angelon said environmental exposure leaves gradual effects on hair, with damage accumulating over time and often becoming visible through loss of shine, rough texture and increased hair fall.
She said dust particles and smoke can mix with the natural oils of the hair and scalp, forming a layer of build-up that makes the hair surface uneven and reduces its ability to reflect light, resulting in a dull appearance.
Pollutants can also contribute to oxidative stress, potentially damaging hair cuticles and natural lipids, making hair dry, frizzy and more vulnerable to tangling and breakage.
Hair fall, however, is more complex, as pollution-related build-up and scalp irritation may affect the environment required for healthy hair growth. Research into the direct link between pollution and hair loss is still ongoing, and factors such as stress, diet and seasonal changes can also contribute, she said.
Emphasising the importance of scalp care, Angelon recommended using a mild shampoo every two to three days, particularly for people frequently exposed to traffic pollution and smoke. Gentle scalp massage with fingertips can help remove accumulated dirt and residue.
Rinsing hair with water after prolonged exposure to polluted air and applying a conditioning mask once a week to the mid-lengths and ends can help maintain moisture and smoothness. Regular trimming can also prevent split and frayed ends.
She highlighted the role of plant-based ingredients such as coconut, shea butter, aloe vera, Amazonian murumuru and açaí in hair-care formulations, saying they can help retain moisture without weighing down the hair.
Henna, traditionally used in Indian hair care, is also being combined with Amazonian herbs in newer formulations, bringing together plant-based ingredients from different traditions to support hair health and shine.
Angelon also advised consumers to examine product labels and opt for formulations that avoid ammonia and related ingredients such as ethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine. She stressed the importance of gentle handling, recommending wide-tooth combs for detangling wet hair, starting from the ends, and avoiding tight hairstyles that exert pressure on hair roots.
She said maintaining healthy hair requires consistent washing, adequate moisturising and careful product selection, adding that persistent hair shedding, scalp itching or sensitivity should be evaluated by a dermatologist or trichologist.
