Bengaluru police block CJP's Tiranga March, cite HC order on protests

Bengaluru, Oct 16 (UNI) Bengaluru police have denied permission to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to take out a Tiranga March from Town Hall to the Quit India Memorial near Mysuru Bank Circle, invoking restrictions on public demonstrations and citing a Karnataka High Court directive limiting protests to designated venues.
The decision has brought the spotlight back on the restrictions governing public demonstrations in Bengaluru, with the organisers maintaining that their proposed march was a peaceful expression of patriotism and not a conventional protest.
The march, scheduled for 4 pm on Friday, was expected to draw 200 to 300 participants. CJP had planned the event in association with Jagrata Karnataka and My Vote, My Right as part of its "Lehra Do Tiranga" campaign.
Police denied permission on the grounds that Town Hall was not an authorised venue for demonstrations and that a gathering in the busy city centre could disrupt traffic. Freedom Park remains the designated venue for protests under the prevailing restrictions.
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the organisers had not informed the government in advance and that Town Hall was not an authorised venue for such gatherings.
However, Rahul Jagrata, Karnataka coordinator of CJP, maintained that the march was intended to be peaceful. He said the organisers had submitted an intimation to the police and were awaiting an official response on permission.
The denial comes amid a wider debate over whether confining demonstrations to a designated location adequately accommodates citizens' right to peaceful assembly. Activists and citizens' groups have questioned the restrictions, arguing that public demonstrations often derive their significance from the locations where they are held.
The authorities, meanwhile, have defended the need to regulate rallies in a crowded metropolitan area to maintain public order and prevent traffic disruption.
The CJP campaign envisages Tiranga Marches in multiple cities. The restrictions imposed on the Bengaluru event, alongside reported curbs on similar gatherings elsewhere, have renewed attention to the challenges faced by organisations seeking to stage public events outside designated protest zones.
The issue places the focus on the balance between the right to peaceful assembly and the police's responsibility to regulate public gatherings.
