Rahul Gandhi remarks land BJP leader and former DGP R Sreelekha in legal trouble

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 16 (UNI) Police have registered a case against Kerala BJP state vice-president and former DGP R Sreelekha over her controversial remarks against Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, at a party meeting in Punalur, Kollam district.
The case was registered by Punalur police under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with wantonly giving provocation with the intent to cause a riot, following complaints from Congress leaders.
Former Kerala police chief T.P. Senkumar has questioned the police action, alleging inconsistency in the response to complaints against political leaders. He asked why no similar action had been taken over remarks allegedly made by Congress worker Raju P. Nair, who described the Prime Minister and union Home Minister as traitors during a television discussion.
The controversy arose from Sreelekha's speech at a BJP protest meeting in Punalur on Wednesday, where she criticised the Congress-led agitation in New Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She compared Rahul Gandhi's conduct during the protest to that of a person under the influence of drugs.
The remarks triggered strong protests from Congress leaders, who alleged that her comments were defamatory and had hurt religious sentiments through the use of the term 'Thandavam', associated with the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva.
Youth Congress state vice-president Vishnu Sunil Pandalam had lodged a complaint with the state police chief seeking action against Sreelekha. Other Congress leaders also approached police authorities over the speech.
Senkumar's response has intensified the political debate surrounding the case, with questions being raised about whether the law is being applied consistently to statements made by leaders and workers of different political parties.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions in Kerala over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and opposition protests against the Election Commission. The case has brought renewed attention to the legal boundaries of political speech and the circumstances under which controversial political remarks may attract criminal proceedings.
