Rahul Gandhi unfit as LoP, BJP says he is undermining constitutional institutions

Bengaluru, Oct 7 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday stepped up its attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, calling him “unfit” for the post and accusing him of repeatedly undermining constitutional institutions through his campaign against the Election Commission.
Assembly LoP and former DCM R Ashoka said Rahul Gandhi was attempting to settle political disputes through street protests instead of following constitutional and institutional procedures.
“Rahul Gandhi is unfit as the Leader of Opposition. He is repeatedly attacking constitutional institutions,” the BJP leader said, targeting the Congress leader over his criticism of the Election Commission.
Ashoka argued that the Election Commission was an independent constitutional body and could not be removed or challenged through protests on the streets.
“If the Election Commission has to be removed, there are rules and regulations. Parliament has to be convened, the allegations have to be explained, a majority has to be established and the matter has to go to the President for assent,” the leader said.
Ashoka also accused Rahul Gandhi of selectively questioning constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission, Enforcement Directorate, CBI and judiciary.
“What institution has Rahul Gandhi left? The ED is BJP, the CBI is BJP, now the Election Commission is BJP, and even the judiciary is being questioned,” he said.
The BJP leader questioned the Congress' criticism of the Election Commission despite the party having won elections in several states.
“If elections were being rigged, how did Congress win in Karnataka and Telangana? Elections were also held in Kerala after the SIR, and Congress won there,” he said.
Ashoka accused the Congress of accepting the Election Commission when it wins elections and questioning the institution when it loses.
“Wherever Congress wins, the Election Commission is good; wherever it loses, the Election Commission is not good. This is Rahul Gandhi's ‘Rahukala’ politics,” he said.
The BJP leader also drew a parallel with the demand for a change in Karnataka's leadership, saying political leaders could not be removed merely through street demonstrations.
“If I stand on the road and shout that DK Shivakumar should step down as chief minister, will he step down? He can be removed only if the required majority is demonstrated inside the Legislative Assembly,” he said.
Ashoka alleged that the Congress' continued attacks on constitutional institutions were damaging public confidence in democratic processes and warned that the party would face political consequences if it continued along the same path.
“If Congress continues like this, the people of Karnataka and Telangana will reject it in the coming elections,” he added.
