PM Modi to visit Chennai on Oct 11, launch Chennai Metro Phase-2, take ride with Vijay, events at IIT-M,, Ilaiyaraaja music centre inauguration

Chennai, Oct 2 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tamil Nadu on a day-long hectic tour on October 11 and participate in a series of programmes in Chennai.
According to the schedule, Modi will arrived from Delhi and launch a 14.64 km first stretch as part of Phase-2 of Chennai Metro Rail project and attend events at IIT-Madras and inaugurate a special music centre dedicated to music maestro Ilaiyaraaja.
Seven months after getting all regulatory clearances, the first operational stretch of Chennai Metro’s Phase-II expansion will be launched by the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to travel by Metro Rail from Poonamallee to Porur as part of his visit along with Chief Minister Vijay who will be sharing the dais with Modi in an event for the first time after becoming CM.
The 14.64-km Poonamallee-Vadapalani corridor has been completed with 11 elevated stations. The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has completed the required testing and obtained the necessary approvals following an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.
The section, part of Corridor-4 or the Yellow Line, runs between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani and is the first segment of the Phase II network to receive approval for commercial operations. The commissioner of Metro Railway Safety cleared the stretch for operations in February, paving the way for the launch.
The line will eventually form part of a larger east-west metro link connecting the rapidly expanding western suburbs with the rest of Chennai’s public transport network. The opening is expected to provide an alternative to the increasingly congested arterial roads in the western part of the city, while also improving connectivity to existing metro services.
The stretch forms part of the 26-km Lighthouse-Poonamallee corridor under Phase-II, which is being developed as part of the 118.9-km Phase II project across three corridors. Trial runs, including checks of signalling, track performance, train operations and structural safety, have already been completed.
The service was earlier expected to be opened in February, but the inauguration was delayed while awaiting confirmation of the Prime Minister's schedule.
After the Metro programme, Modi will proceed to the IIT-Madras campus where he is scheduled to interact with founders of start-up companies. The interaction is expected to focus on the entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem and the work being undertaken by emerging start-up ventures. The Prime Minister will then proceed to the nearby Kendriya Vidyalaya ground, where another programme has been planned.
During his visit to the IIT-Madras campus, Modi will also offer prayers at the Jalakandeswarar Temple located inside the campus. The temple visit forms part of his itinerary before he proceeds to the other scheduled programmes.
One of the major events during the visit will be the inauguration of a special music centre associated with music maestro Ilaiyaraaja. The centre is being established as a facility for music-related research and activities.
The foundation stone for the Ilaiyaraaja Music Research Centre was laid in 2024 through IIT-Madras. For the establishment of the centre, a Memorandum of Understanding was entered into with Ilaiyaraaja's music company. The centre is now set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi during his Chennai visit.
In the evening, Modi will participate in a programme at the Chennai Convention Centre.
After completing all his engagements, the Prime Minister is scheduled to leave Chennai for Delhi in the evening.
Earlier reports indicated that Mr Modi might also virtually inaugurate the Vellore Airport and lay foundation stones for other projects during the visit. But whether this programme would be held or not was not known as of now.
