Kumaraswamy meets NICE land losers, vows to fight alongside farmers

Bengaluru, Oct 2 (UNI) union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy on Friday met farmers and land losers affected by the Bengaluru-Mysuru Infrastructure Corridor (NICE) project and assured them that he would fight alongside them to secure justice.
Kumaraswamy travelled to four locations, beginning at Madavara Junction and scheduled to conclude his visit at Ganasandra, meeting affected farmers from more than 30 villages.
“I am setting out to receive the grievances of people who have suffered after losing their land for the Bengaluru-Mysuru Infrastructure Corridor project. From Friday morning until evening, I will personally meet my affected people,” he said in a statement ahead of the visit.
Appealing to farmers, JD(S) workers and leaders to participate in large numbers, Kumaraswamy said, “Let us fight together. We should not rest until we achieve our goal.”
The visit comes days after Kumaraswamy stepped up his attack on the NICE project, alleging large-scale irregularities and claiming that the alleged scam was worth more than Rs 3 lakh crore.
He has also questioned the rise in the assets of Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, alleging that his assets increased from Rs 4 crore in 2003 to Rs 1,413 crore in 2023.
Kumaraswamy has alleged that Shivakumar and his brother, former Congress MP D K Suresh, misused legislative and executive machinery in connection with the BMIC project, adversely affecting farmers and facilitating large-scale irregularities.
He has challenged the state government to act on the allegations and said Shivakumar should resign if the government lacked the courage to address them.
Kumaraswamy has also claimed that the NICE issue was bigger than the 2G spectrum scam and promised to release more documents as part of his alleged expose.
The allegations and documents cited by Kumaraswamy, however, would require examination by the competent authorities to establish the facts.
The BMIC project, popularly known as the NICE project, was initiated in 1995 during the tenure of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, Kumaraswamy's father. The project was envisaged to improve road connectivity between Bengaluru and Mysuru through a tolled expressway and associated infrastructure.
The project has subsequently been at the centre of a prolonged dispute over land acquisition and the interests of farmers affected by the project.
