Congress a party in decline, clinging to hollow promises: Deve Gowda

Raichur, June 27 (UNI) In a blistering critique aimed squarely at the Congress, former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda today declared that the grand old party is rapidly losing ground across the country — including in Karnataka — and accused it of surviving on empty rhetoric rather than meaningful governance.
“Where is Congress today?” Gowda asked at a party meeting in Raidurga. “What strength does it have left in Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, or even Karnataka? This is a party in decline — it’s clinging to hollow promises and ignoring the ground realities.”
The statement, seen as one of Gowda’s sharpest political attacks in recent years, comes as tensions rise between JD(S) and the ruling Congress in Karnataka.
Shifting focus to the state’s fiscal health, Gowda slammed the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government for prioritising grand inaugurations over basic administration. “There is no money even to pay government employees. When I was in power, I said — please, during such times, don’t inaugurate statues,” he remarked, calling out the leadership for “lavish shows” at a time when municipal clerks are reportedly going unpaid.
He went on to highlight the tireless efforts of his son, H.D. Kumaraswamy, and JD(S)’s vision-driven politics. “Kumaraswamy works round the clock, even past midnight, on programmes like Pancharatna and Jaladhare. These aren’t token gestures. They’re designed to reach every household in Karnataka.”
In a strong defence of JD(S)'s political relevance, Gowda also addressed criticism of dynastic politics head-on. “This is not just Deve Gowda’s party, or Kumaraswamy’s, or Nikhil’s. I fold my hands and appeal — this is your party. The people must take ownership of it,” he said, calling on party workers and youth to reclaim JD(S) as a mass movement, not a family fiefdom.
Wrapping up his fiery address, Gowda urged politicians to focus on governance, not optics. “Statue inaugurations can wait. Right now, we need to save this state and its people. I will be back — give me a little time.”
As Karnataka gears up for local body and future Assembly elections, Gowda’s remarks are being seen as both a rallying cry for JD(S) cadres and a sharp political missile aimed at the Congress’ leadership in Bengaluru and beyond.
