Hariprasad alleges unilateral decisions, seeks CEC's resignation

Bengaluru, Sept 25 (UNI) Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president B K Hariprasad on Friday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the Election Commission had taken unilateral decisions in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls despite objections from the other Election Commissioners.
Addressing a press conference here, Hariprasad announced a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Friday against the SIR exercise and said political parties and organisations that believe in democracy would be invited to participate.
He alleged that the other two Election Commissioners had expressed their disagreement with decisions taken by the Commission on 14 occasions over the past 10 months, but that the decisions were nevertheless taken unilaterally.
"Democracy depends on the Election Commission. But the democratic system is being undermined for the benefit of one political party and one leader," he alleged.
Hariprasad claimed that 63 lakh voters in Bihar, 91 lakh in West Bengal and 1.07 crore in Karnataka had been removed from electoral rolls.
He alleged that the deletions disproportionately affected minorities, Dalits and economically weaker sections and said he had received around 65,000 applications relating to deleted names, many of which, he claimed, did not bear signatures.
"The problem is not merely with the electoral roll. The problem lies in the SIR process adopted by the Election Commission," he said.
Hariprasad also alleged that Form 6, used for inclusion of names in electoral rolls, had been modified despite objections from the other two Election Commissioners.
Referring to concerns earlier raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he said the party had opposed what he termed unilateral decisions of the Election Commission and demanded a comprehensive and independent inquiry into the SIR exercise.
He further alleged that the Centre and BJP leaders were defending the Election Commission instead of allowing the poll panel to respond to questions raised against it.
Hariprasad said the Congress would intensify its agitation by organising protests across Karnataka in the second phase, demanding the resignation of the CEC.
"We have invited all parties that believe in democracy to join Saturday's protest," he said.
