Velankanni Church-Murugan Temple claim triggers controversy, opens historical debate

Kochi, Oct 29 (UNI) A controversy has erupted over Hindutva commentator Vidyasagar Gurumurthy’s claim that Velankanni Church, one of Tamil Nadu’s prominent Christian pilgrimage centres, was originally a temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, with Hindu Aikya Vedi leader Bhargava Ram backing his contention and calling for an open debate involving historians to examine the historical claims.
Gurumurthy has questioned the historical identity of the famous Marian shrine, arguing that the name Velankanni is associated with Lord Murugan holding a 'Vel' (spear) and Goddess Parvati seated on his lap.
His remarks, made during an interview with a YouTube channel, have triggered a debate over the historical origins of the pilgrimage centre and the interpretation of religious traditions associated with it.
Questioning the historical background of Velankanni, Gurumurthy called for an examination of records dating back around 60 years and asked whether people had visited the place during that period.
“Velankanni means the maiden holding the Vel. Otherwise, how could Mary, who was born somewhere else, be standing there holding a child?” he asked, challenging the Christian religious association of the shrine.
Gurumurthy alleged that Christian symbols, particularly crosses, had been installed at places where Hindus gathered or at abandoned temples. He cited Panchalimedu in Kerala as an example, claiming that the hilltop location had no connection with Christianity but that hundreds of crosses had nevertheless been erected there.
He further alleged that Christian institutions had received protection during British rule, creating a situation in which the installation of crosses could not subsequently be questioned. Drawing a comparison with the Waqf system, he claimed that the erection of crosses was intended to establish religious dominance over other faiths.
Gurumurthy also alleged that some Hindu ascetics adopted positions favourable to Christian churches because they expected benefits from church institutions or aspired to travel to the United States.
His remarks have brought questions concerning religious identity, historical claims and the relationship between different religious communities into the controversy.
Extending support to Gurumurthy, Hindu Aikya Vedi leader Bhargava Ram has argued that the claim concerning Velankanni’s possible Hindu religious origins should not be dismissed without examining the historical evidence.
In a Facebook post titled 'Velarnakanni and the Sikkal Singaravelan Temple', Bhargava Ram said he had written about the subject on his Facebook account around 2013. He criticised those he described as secularists for attacking Gurumurthy over his remarks on Velankanni and maintained that the issue warranted a more detailed historical investigation.
Bhargava Ram recalled that he was the general convenor of the 10th state conference of Hindu Aikya Vedi held in Thiruvananthapuram, during which several seminars were organised as part of the preparations for the event. At one such seminar, Tamil Nadu-based historian Gautham Ramakrishna presented a paper.
He said he had engaged in an extended informal discussion with the historian, during which the conversation turned to the history of Velarnakanni and its possible association with the Sikkal Singaravelan Temple, a prominent Murugan shrine in Tamil Nadu.
Following that discussion, Bhargava Ram said, he personally visited Velankanni and spoke to several elderly residents to understand the place’s historical background.
According to the accounts he said he had gathered from members of the older generation, a ceremonial procession carrying a 'Vel' used to proceed from the church premises to the Sikkal Singaravelan Temple until relatively recent times.
Bhargava Ram further claimed that the original place of worship was associated with a goddess who, according to the religious tradition he described, bestowed the Vel on Lord Murugan to enable him to kill the demon Surapadma. He alleged that the shrine was subsequently destroyed following Portuguese intervention.
He said he had understood from his enquiries that the shrine had been maintained by members of fishing communities.
Seeking to place the issue within a wider historical context, Bhargava Ram referred to what he described as the disappearance of several coastal goddess temples in Kerala.
He cited the Thumpoly Devi Temple and the Kokkothamangalam Devi Temple as examples of shrines that, according to his account, had disappeared over time. He also pointed to the change in the place name Kokkothamangalam to Kokkamangalam, presenting it as part of his argument concerning changes associated with the region’s religious history.
Bhargava Ram maintained that Gurumurthy’s contention could not be dismissed outright and said his subsequent enquiries had indicated that Gautham Ramakrishna and some others had undertaken further studies on the subject.
His intervention has given the controversy a wider political and ideological dimension, with the debate extending beyond Gurumurthy’s original remarks to questions about historical evidence, the origins of religious sites and competing interpretations of cultural heritage.
Calling for an evidence-based examination rather than a confrontation over the remarks, Bhargava Ram proposed an open debate or seminar involving historians to discuss the claims concerning Velankanni and its alleged links with the Sikkal Singaravelan Temple.
“If necessary, we can organise an open debate or seminar involving historians on this issue. History should be discussed objectively, beyond sensational news,” he said.
The claims made by Gurumurthy and supported by Bhargava Ram remain assertions that require independent historical verification. The accounts cited in Bhargava Ram’s post, including those attributed to elderly residents, have not by themselves established that the present Velankanni Church was built over a Murugan temple or that the shrine was destroyed following Portuguese intervention.
