Kerala HM demands apology from R Sreelekha over Rahul Gandhi remark, seeks accountability in NSUI leader’s assault complaint

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 15 (UNI) Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala today demanded that former DGP R. Sreelekha withdraw her remark describing Rahul Gandhi’s democratic protest in Delhi as a “drug-induced tandava” and apologise, saying such personal insinuations were unbecoming of a person who had held a senior police position.
Chennithala said political disagreement was legitimate, but personal attacks could not be passed off as political criticism.
He also objected to the use of the term ‘Tandava’, pointing out that it was a sacred expression associated with Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance and should not be dragged into a crude political insult.
Rahul Gandhi could be challenged on his politics, positions and arguments, but replacing political debate with baseless personal insinuations would lower the standard of public discourse, he said.
“Disagree politically. Debate fiercely. But maintain dignity,” Chennithala said, reiterating his demand for Sreelekha to withdraw the remark and apologise.
In a separate statement, Chennithala said Kerala Police had registered a Zero FIR on a complaint filed by NSUI leader and law student Athira, who alleged that she had been subjected to serious assault and mistreatment by Delhi Police during a protest in New Delhi.
He said Kerala Police was examining all available legal avenues to pursue the matter.
Describing the right to protest as fundamental to democracy, Chennithala said allegations of violence against a detained protester, along with the alleged failure to act on her complaint, called for a proper investigation and accountability.
