Rajmata asserts Ambari ownership, faults govt for ignoring court order

Mysuru, Nov 4 (UNI) Rajmata Pramoda Devi Wadiyar on Wednesday asserted that the Mysore Palace, Ambari and royal throne were private properties of the erstwhile royal family, alleging that the state government had failed to implement a court order directing the return of the palace.
Addressing a press conference here amid the controversy over the disruption of Mysore Dasara celebrations and traditional palace rituals, she said the Ambari and the throne were not covered under the Palace Acquisition Act and would continue to remain in the family's possession.
She said the list of private properties had been submitted to the Central Government in 1947 and was officially approved by VP Menon in 1951.
Referring to the dispute over the palace, Pramoda Devi said the government had entered into an agreement to maintain the property following the death of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, when the family faced a tax liability of over Rs 8 crore.
However, alleging that the terms of the agreement were not honoured, she said the family approached the court, which ordered the government to return the palace within 30 days.
She expressed dissatisfaction over the alleged non-implementation of the order and said officials lacked proper information about the family's private properties.
Taking strong exception to police restrictions during the Dasara festivities, she alleged that religious ceremonies and traditional practices had been disrupted.
She particularly sought action against ACP Chandrashekhar, alleging dereliction of duty near Brahmapuri Gate.
Describing Jatti Kalaga and the ritual of cutting a pumpkin with the royal sword as traditional religious practices, she said such ceremonies should not have been interrupted.
On the Ambari procession, Pramoda Devi clarified that the royal family would not accept rent for its use but would instead be paid royalty.
She, however, expressed willingness to hold discussions with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and other ministers to resolve the issues concerning the palace, its properties and Dasara traditions.
