CPI demands statewide drought declaration, Rs 15,000 monthly relief for unorganised workers

Hyderabad, Oct 28 (UNI) Telangana CPI State Secretary and MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao on Wednesday urged the Telangana government to declare the entire state drought-affected in view of the severe conditions caused by El Niño and demanded a comprehensive relief package for farmers, agricultural labourers and urban workers.
Addressing a press conference at Makhdoom Bhavan here, along with CPI state secretariat members V S Bose and M. Balanarsimha, he called on the state government to submit proposals to the Centre and secure funds for drought mitigation.
He demanded crop-loss compensation for farmers and assistance in providing employment, livestock fodder, drinking water and essential commodities to affected families.
Highlighting the impact on urban livelihoods, Kunamneni sought a monthly relief allowance of at least RS 15,000 for unorganised-sector workers who lose their livelihoods due to the drought.
He also urged the government to curb the rising prices of essential commodities and drinking water, warning that the CPI would launch protests against hoarding and black marketing.
The CPI leader announced that party leaders would tour drought-affected districts on November 3 and 4, followed by dharnas at district headquarters on November 10 to demand immediate relief measures.
He also called for transparent allocation of Indiramma houses to eligible poor families through a lottery system, completion of house-site regularisation under GOs 58 and 59, and allocation of house sites to homeless journalists.
He said the party planned to raise these issues with the Chief Minister.
On political matters, Kunamneni said the CPI leadership was discussing whether to contest the upcoming MLC elections, with a final decision expected after a meeting with the Chief Minister.
He also expressed concern over alleged voter deletions during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and supported demands for an inquiry into the Election Commission’s functioning.
He announced support for a protest in Delhi on November 1 and ‘Jail Bharo’ programmes scheduled for December 2, 3 and 4.
