CPI demands comprehensive drought relief package for Telangana farmers

Hyderabad, Nov 4 (UNI) Telangana CPI Secretary and MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao on Wednesday demanded that the Telangana government announce a comprehensive drought relief package, alleging that farmers across the State were facing a severe crisis due to crop losses and the failure of rains.
Addressing a press conference at Makhdoom Bhavan here, Kunamneni said Agriculture Department estimates indicated that crops had been damaged across 12.5 lakh acres, while farmers in many other areas could not take up cultivation. He criticised the Centre for its alleged negligence and urged the State government to lead an all-party delegation to Delhi to seek immediate assistance.
He demanded compensation of Rs.30,000 per acre for paddy and Rs.50,000 for commercial crops, including cotton, besides Rs.10,000 per acre for farmers who could not sow crops due to drought. He also sought monthly financial assistance of Rs.10,000 for five to six months to poor families who had lost their livelihoods, along with the distribution of food grains, cattle fodder and essential commodities through fair-price shops.
Kunamneni said CPI teams had been visiting drought-affected districts since November 2 to assess the situation and alleged that representatives of the Central and State governments had failed to conduct field-level assessments. He demanded the immediate release of the Rs.25,000 crore drought relief sought by the State from the Centre and called for the introduction of a crop insurance scheme to protect farmers.
Announcing the party's action plan, he said the CPI would organise protests at all District Collectorates on November 10, followed by demonstrations at mandal headquarters, until the government addressed farmers' grievances.
He also questioned union Home Minister Amit Shah's silence on Telangana's drought situation during his visit to the State, saying the Centre should focus on farmers' problems instead of politically motivated marches.
Kunamneni further demanded Rs1 crore compensation for the family of the deceased RTC woman employee and accountability from those responsible for alleged lapses in her medical treatment. He said a CPI delegation had also urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to ensure allocation of Indiramma houses to all eligible poor without political discrimination, address the grievances of AgriGold victims, and conduct student union elections in colleges and universities.
He also announced that the CPI had decided to support Congress candidates Ramreddy Sarvothama Reddy and Rammohan Reddy in the upcoming Graduate MLC elections, citing the party's association with the INDIA alliance.
