Owaisi welcomes SC observation on refusal to sing Vande Mataram

Hyderabad, Sep 22 (UNI) AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court's observation that a person should not face criminal consequences merely for refusing to sing Vande Mataram on grounds of conscience or religion.
In a post on X, Owaisi said the freedom to disagree was an essential part of the liberty of thought, speech and expression. The Supreme Court, while hearing a challenge to the 2026 amendment relating to the National Song, indicated that it would examine whether criminal consequences could be imposed on a conscientious objector.
Owaisi also criticised Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for referring to people challenging the law in court as having a "Naxalite mindset", saying that approaching the courts to question the validity of a law was an exercise of constitutional rights. The remarks were made during a heated exchange in the Supreme Court hearing.
