AX-4 ISS Mission piloted by Indian astronaut put off again

Chennaui, June 20 (UNI) The deferred Axiom-4 mission to International Space Station
piloted by decorated Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, scheduled for June 22, has
been put off again to evaluate ISS operations after recent repair work in the aft (back)
most segment of the orbital laboratory’s Zvezda service module.
Axiom space in a latest update on Friday said the new launch date would be announced
in the coming days.
The mission, initially scheduled for May 29, was deferred multiple times due to various
factors including weather, LOX leak and other technical glitches.
The mission involved 14 days of docking in ISS in LEO to conduct around 60 research
experiments, including seven microgravity experiments by ISRO.
The four member crew from US, India, Hungary and Poland, remains in quarantine in
Florida, and the astronauts stand ready to launch when the station is ready to receive
them.
"NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX continue reviewing launch opportunities for Axiom
Mission 4 to the International Space Station. NASA has made the decision to stand down
from a launch on Sunday, June 22, and will target a new launch date in the coming days",
it said.
The space agency needs additional time to continue evaluating ISS operations after recent
repair work in the aft (back) most segment of the orbital laboratory’s Zvezda service module.
Because of the space station’s interconnected and interdependent systems, NASA wants to
ensure the station is ready for additional crew members, and the agency is taking the time
necessary to review data.
NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX appreciate the historic nature of this mission for the nations
of India, Poland, and Hungary, as well as the world.
"The crew remains in quarantine in Florida, and the astronauts stand ready to launch when the
station is ready to receive them", it said.
This milestone will herald India’s return to human spaceflight after more than four decades,
after Rakesh Sharma’s iconic 1984 mission aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.
