After final orbit manoeuvring, NVS-03 placed in GSO, ISRO set to operationalise NavIC constellation for defence needs

Chennai, Nov 5 (UNI) The NVS-03 Navigtion satellite was successfully injected into the intended Geostationary Orbit (GSO) after the final orbit raising manouvre, paving the way for opertionalising the NavIC constellation for strategic defence needs and strengthening border surveillance in the wake of fast changing geo-political situation.
After a perfect lift off from the Second Launch Pad, the satellite was injected into a 170.3 km x 38080 km orbit by GSLV on October 30 at 2351 hrs. After the orbit manoeuvering, the spacecraft was now taken to the desired orbit. ,
ISRO today said four orbit manoeuvres have been successfully completed with a cumulative LAM engine burn of 6164 seconds. With this the satellite has reached Geo Synchronous Orbit (35765 km x 36196 km) at an inclination of 29.980 deg.
The satellite health is normal.
NVS-03 is the third satellite in next generation navigation satellite system envisaged for providing continuity of navigation services for IRNSS series. The satellite carries indigenous atomic clock along with the procured clocks. It also includes L1 signal in addition to L5 and S band signals with coverage over Indian land mass and a region extending 1500 km around Indian geopolitical boundary.
The 2,250 kg NVS-03 satellite was a significant mission aimed at giving a further push to opertionalise the NavIC constellation to strengthen the defence needs. So far three NaviC satellites are in operation in space, two first generation IRNSS spacecrafts and NVS-01 satellite. Now that NVS-03 was placed in the Geostationary Orbit, (GSO) completing the minimum requirement of four satellites to operationalise the NavIC constellation, it would give a major fillip for military surveillance in the wake of fast changing geo-political situations.
Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is India's independent regional navigation satellite system designed to provide accurate Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) service to users in India as well as the region extending about 1,500 km beyond the Indian landmass, which is its primary service area.
Having stationed in the GSO, the NVS-03 would now restore the standalone 3D positioning services for the NavIC system completing the mandatory requirement of four satellites for the benefit of the Indian Armed forces. NavIC offers dual services -- standard positioning service for civilians and an encrypted Restricted Service for authorised users like the Indian Military.
India has so far launched 11 Navigation satellites of which only three IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1L and NVS-01 which adds L1 band support, are providing the requisite services and NVS-03 will be the fourth. After NVS-03 comes to service ISRO would activate the NavIC system.
Initially named Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), it was rechristened as NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) aimed at providing PNT services across India and upto 1,500 km beyond its borders. The NavIC contains a constellation of seven satellites -- three in GTO and four in inclined GTO. NVS-01 was in orbit, NVS-02 has failed, NVS-03's successful injection made it the fourth to complete the minimum constellation and it would be followed by NVS-04 and NVS-05.
