INDIA bloc stages protest against SIR in Karnataka, demands CEC's resignation

Bengaluru, Nov 5 (UNI) Opposition INDIA bloc parties in Karnataka on Thursday staged a protest at Freedom Park here against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and scrapping of the exercise.
The demonstration was part of the bloc's nationwide agitation against the SIR process and the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The protesters sought the scrapping of the SIR exercise, alleging that it could undermine democratic rights and affect the electoral participation of eligible voters.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president B K Hariprasad had earlier said the Bengaluru demonstration would mark the beginning of a wider campaign across the state, with protests planned at district and taluk levels.
CPI(M) state secretary K Prakash said the INDIA bloc was also demanding democratisation of the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner, in accordance with the Supreme Court's directions.
He further demanded the withdrawal of the law granting permanent immunity to the CEC.
Hariprasad had alleged that the BJP and RSS were misusing constitutional institutions to weaken democratic processes, asserting that the agitation would continue until Kumar resigned.
Leaders of various INDIA bloc constituents, including the CPI, CPI(M), Forward Bloc and CPI(ML), participated in the campaign.
The Bengaluru protest followed the INDIA bloc's November 1 demonstration at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, where opposition parties had raised similar demands.
