AP: Depression to intensify into 'severe cyclonic storm', official machinery put on high alert

Vijayawada, Oct 25 (UNI) The depression, which has remained stationary in the same area for the past three hours, is expected to intensify into a deep depression today and further escalate into a cyclonic storm on Monday.
Giving this information based on Met data, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) MD Prakhar Jain said here on Sunday that the depression is currently centered 870 km from Visakhapatnam, 960 km from Kakinada, 1060 km from Machilipatnam, and 1130 km from Bapatla.
He advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and tie down fishing boats and place fishing nets in safer places. People are also cautioned against attempting to take selfies near the high waves along the beaches.
Prakhar Jain said that the depression is likely to intensify into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ over the west-central Bay of Bengal by October 27 and further into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ by the morning of October 28. It is expected to cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the afternoon of October 28 with wind speeds reaching 115–125 kmph at the time of landfall, he said, cautioning the public to remain extremely vigilant.
Home Minister V Anitha reviewed the situation with the district Collectors and SP and instructed them to take precautionary measures. She directed them to remove hazardous hoardings and take steps to shift people from low-lying areas to safer places, if necessary.
The Home Minister directed that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams be kept on standby to ensure that relief operations in cyclone-affected areas face no hindrances. Officials are instructed to continuously monitor the situation through district control rooms and take immediate action in response to evolving weather conditions.
The Home Minister also directed officials to prohibit the entry of tourists on beaches and asked them to refrain from taking selfies or engaging in other risky activities in areas where high sea waves are expected. She also asked people not to heed rumors circulating on social media and not to forward such information to others. UNI DP CDS
