Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu makes landfall in AP, to weaken further

Chennai, Nov 3 (UNI) The Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu, the second successive system over the bay, crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast early on Tuesday morning and would weaken further, even as rains, barring brief showers, abated in Chennai city and adjoining North Tamil Nadu districts, with the Met office forecasting spells to continue till November 7 across the state.
In a National bulletin, the IMD said the Severe Cyclonic Storm “Murasu” over Westcentral Bay of Bengal close to south Andhra Pradesh coast moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 8 kmph during the past 6 hours, crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narasapur close to Ongole during 0330 to 0530 hours with the wind speed of 100-110 kmph and gusting upto 120 kmph.
It lay centered at 0730 hours of today over south Andhra Pradesh coast, 30 km north-northeast of Ongole, about 40 km west-southwest of Bapatla (Andhra Pradesh), 90 km north of Kavali (Andhra Pradesh), 100 km south-southwest of Vijayawada, 120 km west-southwest of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 140 km north of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh).
It is likely to continue to move North-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a Cyclonic storm (wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph
and gusting up to 100 kmph) by noon and further weaken into a Deep Depression (wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph and gusting up to
75 kmph) by midnight of today.
It is under the continuous surveillance of Doppler Weather Radars at Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam.
Meanwhile, except for scattered showers in Chennai and adjoining districts since last night and this morning, rains abated, though chilly weather conditions prevailed and sky continued to remain grey.
Met office said since the system has crossed the AP coast, the intensity of the rains will decline gradually in Northern districts of the State. They would receive moderate rains thereafter and the rains are expected to continue in the state till November 7. Heavy and moderate showers will occur in North Interior, Cauvery delta, Southern and South Coastal districts.
