Ready to cut bus fares if Centre lowers fuel prices: Shivakumar

Bengaluru, Nov 4 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the state government was prepared to reduce bus fares if the Centre lowered petrol and diesel prices.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Shivakumar was responding to opposition parties' call for a statewide protest against the bus fare hike.
"Transport corporations are running at a loss," he said, adding that the state had provided financial support when the corporations faced difficulty meeting their fuel costs. He also cited the financial burden of the 'Shakti' scheme, which provides free bus travel for women. "Consequently, fares may have been increased by ₹2 or ₹3 on certain routes."
Shivakumar questioned why the opposition had not protested against increases in fuel, cooking gas, fertilizer, pesticide, steel, cement and medicine prices. He acknowledged the difficulties farmers face amid the ongoing drought but said transport corporations also needed to recover financially.
He urged opposition parties to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reduce the cesses and taxes on petrol and diesel. "If the Central government reduces fuel prices, the state government will take appropriate steps accordingly," he said.
Asked about reports that milk prices had risen by ₹12 per litre in some places, rather than the announced ₹8, Shivakumar said the variation was due to differences in milk quality and fat content.
"Regular milk, milk from desi cows and buffalo milk are different varieties. Their fat content also varies," he said.
Asked about Rajmata of Mysore Pramoda Devi's reported dissatisfaction over the Chief Minister's failure to address alleged mismanagement during Dasara, Shivakumar said he was unaware of her concerns.
"We hold the royal family of Karnataka in the highest regard," he said. "I will look into the matter and speak with her."
