Anahat, Abhay settle for squash silver; Harita bags 200m bronze

Aichi-Nagoya, Sept 27 (UNI) India’s squash stars signed off with a double-silver flourish while athletics added another bronze as Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh finished runners-up in the singles events and Harita Bhadra claimed the women’s 200m bronze at the Asian Games here on Sunday.
Anahat, one of India’s brightest young squash prospects, came up against an experienced Malaysian opponent in the women’s final and went down 4-11, 4-11, 7-11 to world No. 5 Sivasangari Subramaniam.
The silver marked another step forward for the 18-year-old, who had won bronze in the mixed doubles and team events at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Abhay, meanwhile, was unable to add the singles gold to his team title, losing 9-11, 5-11, 5-11 to Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow in the men’s final.
The result gave Abhay his third Asian Games medal after his team gold and mixed doubles bronze at Hangzhou.
The two squash silvers came on a day when Harita produced a sharp finish to secure India’s athletics medal in the women’s 200m.
Harita clocked 23.20 seconds and dipped at the line to snatch bronze by just 0.01 seconds from the fourth-placed athlete.
Singapore’s Shanti Pereira, already a silver medallist in the 100m, took gold in a season-best 22.78 seconds, while China’s Chen Yujie claimed silver in 22.93.
India’s Animesh Kujur finished fifth in the men’s 200m final in 20.80 seconds. Thailand’s Puripol Boonson stormed to gold in an Asian Games-record 19.88 seconds, with China’s Huang Youwen taking silver in 20.45 and Japan’s Soshi Mizukubo bronze in 20.56.
The boxing ring also delivered two assured medals for India, with Ankush Panghal and Parveen Hooda powering into the semifinals.
Panghal swept aside Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov 5-0 in the men’s 80kg quarterfinals, while Parveen registered an equally emphatic 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan’s world silver medallist Navbakhor Khamidova in the women’s 65kg quarterfinals.
“I have already secured a medal. But it doesn’t matter. I am looking ahead. I am aiming for the gold,” Panghal said after his victory.
India’s medal hunt remained alive across several disciplines.
The men’s and women’s recurve teams stormed into the semifinals, defeating China 5-1 and Chinese Taipei 6-0 respectively.
Dhiraj Bommadevara and Kumkum Mohod also advanced to the recurve mixed-team semifinals, while Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav entered the compound mixed-team last four.
In volleyball, India opened its campaign with a commanding 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) victory over Vietnam and will next face Hong Kong China in Pool C.
PV Sindhu’s quarterfinal defeat to China’s Chen Yufei brought India’s badminton campaign to a close with the country finishing with one medal — bronze in the men’s team event.
In athletics, Tejaswin Shankar remained third after eight events in the decathlon with 6,571 points, while Murali Sreeshankar and David Patturaj qualified for the men’s long jump final.
India’s shooting campaign also remained in contention, with Esha Singh sixth after the precision round of the women’s 25m pistol qualification and Neeru leading the women’s trap qualification after two rounds.
