Ancy Sojan, Sarvesh Kushare win athletics silvers

Nagoya, Sept 27 (UNI) India’s athletics contingent delivered a rich haul on Day 8 of the Asian Games 2026, with Ancy Sojan and Sarvesh Kushare winning silver medals in women’s long jump and men’s high jump respectively, while Parul Chaudhary and Tejaswin Shankar added bronze medals in the 3000m steeplechase and decathlon.
Ancy Sojan came within two centimetres of gold in a tense women’s long jump final, producing 6.53m to finish behind China’s Huang Yingying, who clinched the title with a 6.55m effort on her final jump. The silver was Ancy’s second successive Asian Games silver after her podium finish at Hangzhou.
Shaili Singh, who had remained in medal contention for much of the competition, finished fourth with 6.42m after China’s Tan Yue snatched bronze with 6.46m on her last attempt.
Sarvesh Kushare also settled for silver in the men’s high jump after clearing 2.25m. Chinese Taipei’s Fu Chao-hsuan took gold on countback, having cleared the same height on his first attempt while Kushare needed two attempts. Both failed in their three attempts at 2.28m.
Aadarsh Ram finished 13th after clearing 2.05m.
Parul Chaudhary produced another national-record performance to win bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, clocking a personal best and national record 9:08.67.
Parul stayed with Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi until the final lap before dropping away. Yavi took gold in an Asian Games record 9:04.36, while Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto Tanui won silver in 9:06.82. India’s Ankita finished fourth in a personal best 9:19.24.
The bronze was Parul’s third Asian Games medal, following her silver in the steeplechase and gold in the 5000m at Hangzhou.
Tejaswin Shankar added another bronze in the decathlon with 7,934 points, following his silver at Hangzhou. He signed off the gruelling competition by winning the 1500m in 4:33.09, earning 724 points in the final event.
Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won gold with 8,123 points, while China’s Chen Xinghua took silver with 8,012.
India also advanced to the women’s hockey semi-finals with a perfect five-win pool campaign, overwhelming Singapore 7-0 in their final Pool B match.
Salima Tete, Sunelita Toppo (two), Lalremsiami, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Nikki Pradhan and Deepika were on the scoresheet. India will face South Korea in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
In boxing, Narender Berwal assured India of another medal by stopping Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep in the first round of their men’s 90kg quarter-final. The contest ended inside two minutes after the Thai boxer received three standing counts.
Narender joined Ankush Panghal and Parveen Hooda in assuring India three boxing medals on the day.
In the men’s 800m, national record-holder Mohammed Afsal qualified for the final after clocking 1:47.37, finishing fifth overall across the heats. Krishnan Kumar, however, missed the final after finishing 13th in 1:50.38.
Animesh Kujur finished fifth in the men’s 200m final in 20.80 seconds. Thailand’s Puripol Boonson won gold in an Asian Games record 19.88, followed by China’s Huang Youwen (20.45) and Japan’s Soshi Mizukubo (20.56).
Nandhini Kongan finished sixth in the women’s 100m hurdles final in 13.45 seconds. Jyothi Yarraji did not start her heat after experiencing discomfort during warm-up.
India’s women’s 4x100m relay quartet of Tamanna, Sneha Satyanarayana Shanuvalli, Sudeshna Shivankar and Abinaya Rajarajan also progressed to the final after winning their heat in a season-best 43.65 seconds.
The final is scheduled for Monday.
