Greaves ton, Jangoo blitz power WI to 295/7 in ODI opener

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 27 (UNI) Justin Greaves' maiden ODI hundred and Amir Jangoo's late fireworks lifted West Indies to a challenging 295 for seven against India in the opening ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium here on Sunday.
What began as a blistering West Indies assault turned into a gripping recovery after India's wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav threatened to rip the innings apart.
Asked to bat first, West Indies raced away in the afternoon sunshine, with Greaves and John Campbell launching an assault that yielded 85 runs in the opening 10 overs. The pair added 135 for the first wicket before Kuldeep finally broke the stand.
Campbell made India pay for its loose bowling, smashing 62 off 60 balls with six fours and three sixes. Greaves was more measured but equally effective, repeatedly finding the gaps and punishing anything overpitched.
Greaves reached his fifty and then marched towards a landmark century as West Indies maintained control. But India's attack gradually tightened the screws.
Prasidh Krishna removed Keacy Carty for 13, before Kuldeep accounted for captain Shai Hope for 12. The left-arm wrist-spinner then produced the decisive double blow.
Greaves completed his maiden ODI hundred with a single in the 35th over, raising his bat after a superb 108-ball 101, featuring 12 fours. But his celebration lasted only moments.
Kuldeep trapped him leg before wicket with a wrong'un. India reviewed the original not-out decision and ball-tracking showed the delivery hitting the off stump.
The very next ball, Kuldeep struck. Jewel Andrew, beaten by the googly and extra bounce, could only edge the ball off the shoulder of his bat, with Rohit Sharma taking an overhead catch at first slip.
West Indies had crashed from 176 for two to 198 for five, and India appeared to have seized control.
Jangoo had other ideas.
The wicketkeeper-batsman launched a counterattack precisely when West Indies needed it, bringing up his second ODI fifty from just 38 balls. He repeatedly targeted India's pace bowlers, hammering Prasidh for three fours in one over and then taking Gurnoor Brar for two fours and a six.
Roston Chase provided valuable support with 24 off 32 balls before Prasidh knocked him over in the 45th over. Jangoo continued the assault, pulling, driving and finding the gaps as the visitors suddenly accelerated.
Matthew Forde fell for seven in the 50th over, caught by Naman Dhir off Nitish Kumar Reddy, but Jangoo remained unbeaten on a sparkling 58 off 43 balls, with seven fours and a six.
His late assault helped West Indies collect 45 runs in the last five overs and push the total to 295 for seven.
Kuldeep finished with outstanding figures of four for 40 from his 10 overs, while Prasidh took two for 60 and Nitish Kumar Reddy one.
India now need 296 to win, but West Indies have ensured that the chase will begin with a question hanging over it: can India's star-studded batting lineup match the aggression that Campbell, Greaves and Jangoo brought to the Greenfield?
