Anahat, Abhay Storm Into Squash Semis, Assure India Two More Medals

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 25 (UNI) India’s squash medal rush gathered pace at the Asian Games here on Friday as Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh stormed into the women’s and men’s singles semifinals, assuring the country of two more medals.
World junior champion Anahat Singh produced a commanding performance to brush aside compatriot Tanvi Khanna 11-2, 11-5, 11-3 in the women’s singles quarterfinals.
The 18-year-old Indian took control from the opening exchanges, using her attacking game and precise drops to race through the first game 11-2. Tanvi attempted to stay in the contest in the second, but Anahat maintained the pressure to take it 11-5 before completing the win 11-3.
A two-time Asian Games medallist from Hangzhou 2023, Anahat is now one victory away from reaching the gold-medal match. She will face Japan’s world No. 6 Satomi Watanabe in the semifinals.
In the men’s singles, Abhay Singh delivered another clinical performance, defeating Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue 11-4, 11-3, 11-6 in 34 minutes to secure his semifinal berth and assure India of another medal.
Abhay dictated the tempo throughout the contest and never allowed his Japanese opponent to build sustained pressure.
He will meet either compatriot Veer Chotrani or Pakistan’s Muhammad Irfan in the semifinals. An Indian victory in the other quarterfinal would set up an all-Indian semifinal and guarantee India a silver medal in the men’s singles.
The two singles medals add to India’s squash success at Aichi-Nagoya, with Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar having already assured the country of a mixed doubles medal by reaching the semifinals.
The singles titles carry additional significance, with the Asian Games champions set to earn quota places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, subject to the applicable qualification regulations.
With three squash events now guaranteed to yield medals, India’s challenge in the sport has emerged as one of the notable medal-producing campaigns at the Games.
