Boxing: Lovlina reaches 75kg final, Priya Ghanghas settles for bronze

Nagoya, Sep 30 (UNI) India's boxing campaign gathered further momentum at the Asian Games here on Wednesday as Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain stormed into the women’s 75kg final, while Priya Ghanghas secured a bronze medal in the 60kg category.
Lovlina produced a gritty performance to edge reigning 70kg world champion Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a closely fought semifinal, setting up a gold-medal clash against China’s Asian champion Bao Ziyi on Friday.
The victory kept Lovlina’s bid for an Asian Games gold alive after she had won silver at the Hangzhou Games in 2023. The Olympic bronze medallist will now have another opportunity to add the continental title to her impressive medal collection.
Lovlina’s success also made her the third Indian boxer to reach the finals at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, joining Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal, who had secured their places in the gold-medal bouts on Tuesday.
Earlier, Priya Ghanghas added another medal to India’s boxing tally after her semifinal run in the women’s 60kg category ended with a 1-4 defeat against China’s world medallist Yang Chengyu.
Priya had advanced to the last four to assure herself of a podium finish but could not overcome Yang in their semifinal contest, settling for bronze.
With Lovlina, Parveen and Ankush through to the finals and Priya assured of bronze, Indian boxing has secured a strong medal haul at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Kapil Pokhariya is also scheduled to be in action later on Wednesday, giving India another chance to add to its medal tally.
For Lovlina, however, the focus now shifts to Friday’s title clash against Bao Ziyi, where she will look to turn her semifinal fightback into an Asian Games gold.
