Indian women's hockey team ends 44-year wait for Asian Games gold; 8 players have Haryana connection

Panchkula, Oct 2 (UNI) The Indian women's hockey team scripted history at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan on Friday, winning the gold medal after a gap of 44 years, with eight players in the title-winning squad having a connection with Haryana. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini congratulated the Indian team and the country on the historic victory, calling it a moment of immense pride.
The triumph marked India's first women's hockey gold at the Asian Games since 1982, ending a more than four-decade wait for the continental title.
"Our daughters have enhanced the prestige of the country across the world," Saini said while congratulating the players on the gold-medal performance.
The victory also underlined Haryana's contribution to Indian women's hockey, with eight members of the gold-winning team associated with the state.
Saini said the achievement reflected the hard work, determination and sporting talent of the players and congratulated the team members, their coaches and families.
The 2026 Asian Games victory assumes added significance for Indian women's hockey as the team had waited 44 years to regain the title. India had won the inaugural women's hockey competition at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
The Chief Minister said Haryana's sportspersons continued to make their presence felt at major international competitions and bring laurels to the country.
