Diveagar Tragedy: Minister Girish Mahajan orders thorough probe, strict action against those responsible

Nashik, Oct 1 (UNI) Expressing deep anguish over the tragic drowning of students who had gone on an educational trip to Diveagar in Raigad district, Maharashtra Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister and Nashik Guardian Minister Girish Mahajan has directed officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take strict action against those found responsible for negligence or lapses in duty.
Following the tragedy, Mahajan contacted the Raigad District Collector and Superintendent of Police over the phone to obtain detailed information about the incident.
He directed them to investigate whether adequate safety precautions had been taken before the trip, how students were permitted to enter the water at the beach, and whether the accompanying teachers and representatives of the educational institution had properly discharged their responsibilities.
He also instructed officials to examine whether a sufficient number of teachers or supervisors were present in proportion to the number of students and whether all prescribed safety protocols had been followed.
Highlighting the responsibility of educational institutions, Mahajan said that schools, colleges, private academies and other institutions regularly organise excursions, educational visits and study tours for students.
During such trips, student safety must be the highest priority, particularly at locations near the sea, rivers, dams, lakes and other water bodies.
He emphasised that educational institutions must prevent students from entering dangerous or deep waters, ensure adequate supervision and implement all necessary safety measures.
"Regardless of which institution the students belong to, the institution organising an excursion must assume full responsibility for their safety. To prevent such tragedies in the future, clear guidelines for educational tours will be formulated across the state and their strict implementation will be ensured," Mahajan said.
The minister also expressed his condolences to the families of the students who lost their lives in the tragedy. He directed the administration to extend all necessary assistance to the bereaved families and ensure that post-mortem examinations and the subsequent handover of the bodies to relatives are completed promptly and with sensitivity.
Reiterating the need for accountability, Mahajan instructed officials to establish the facts through a comprehensive investigation and initiate strict action as per the rules if any negligence or lapses in responsibility are identified.
