Maha mandates Marathi, 15-year residency, and RTO badges for ride-hailing platform drivers

Mumbai, Sep 9 (UNI) In a major crackdown aimed at curbing security risks and streamlining ride-hailing services, the Maharashtra government has rolled out a strict new aggregator policy mandating proficiency in Marathi, mandatory 15-year state residency certificates, and rigorous police background checks for all drivers operating on such ride-booking platforms.
Announcing the comprehensive framework following high-level stakeholder meetings with major transport operators—including Sahakar Taxi, Devdutt Taxi, Cityflo, Rapido, Ola, Uber, and Shalini Cabs—Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that the amendments, enacted under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules on August 12, 2026, are designed to plug severe safety loopholes.
Highlighting concerns over transient workers and unauthorized entries compromising commuter security, the government has made RTO-issued official badges compulsory for all drivers, giving aggregator companies a three-month window to ensure full compliance.
