Maha signs MoU for use of 6.17 crore metric tonnes of fly ash in infrastructure projects

Mumbai, Oct 22 (UNI) The Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO) and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the proposed use of around 6.17 crore metric tonnes of fly ash in infrastructure projects in eastern Maharashtra between January 2027 and December 2028.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Minister of State for Energy Meghna Sakore-Bordikar to promote the sustainable utilisation of fly ash generated by thermal power plants and support infrastructure development while reducing environmental risks.
MAHAGENCO Chairman and Managing Director Radhakrishnan B. and MSRDC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Anilkumar B. Gaikwad signed the MoU.
Senior officials from both organisations were present.
Under the agreement, fly ash from the Koradi, Khaparkheda and Chandrapur thermal power stations will be used for four proposed projects. These include 2.09 crore metric tonnes for the Nagpur-Gondia Expressway, 1.14 crore metric tonnes for the Bhandara-Gadchiroli Expressway, 2.79 crore metric tonnes for the Nagpur-Chandrapur Expressway and 0.15 crore metric tonnes for the Navegaon More-Surjagad mineral transportation corridor.
Fly ash for projects in the Nagpur region will be sourced from the Koradi or Khaparkheda power stations, while projects in the Chandrapur region will receive supplies from the Chandrapur power station.
The quantities may be revised depending on technical requirements, site conditions and availability.
Separate tripartite agreements will be executed between the concerned thermal power stations, MSRDC and authorised contractors or relevant agencies to determine project-wise quantities, collection schedules, transportation arrangements and financial assistance terms.
The agreement also provides for verification of fly ash quantities, certification of its utilisation and scrutiny of supporting documents before processing eligible financial assistance claims.
The participating organisations will ensure compliance with environmental regulations, technical standards and statutory requirements during the extraction, transportation, handling and utilisation of fly ash.
The initiative aims to achieve 100 per cent utilisation of fly ash in accordance with the union government's notification dated December 31, 2021, and implement the Maharashtra government's fly ash utilisation policy issued on September 19, 2025.
The agreement is expected to facilitate the large-scale utilisation of accumulated fly ash, reduce environmental and operational risks associated with long-term storage, and promote sustainable resource management in infrastructure development.
The MoU will remain valid until March 31, 2032, or completion of the relevant projects, whichever is earlier. Its validity may be extended with the approval of the competent authorities of both organisations.
