Maha: Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana takes 'Kata Bandh' agitation in Sangli, Satara districts

Sangli, Oct 15 (UNI) Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) national president and former MP, Raju Shetty, today took a very aggressive stance against anti-farmer policies of the central government and many major sugar factories and called for a 'Kata Bandh' agitation (shut down of all operations of sugar factories) in sugar belt of western Maharashtra's Sangli and Satara districts.
After suspending the road blockade agitation of Pune-Bangalore national highway yesterday, SSS workers and farmers led by Shetty today marched directly to the sugar factories of Sangli and Satara districts after paying homage to the statue of Kranti Singh Naba Patil at Yedemachindra in Satara district.
They targeted Krishna factory in Karad (Satara), Kranti sugar factory in Kundal (Sangli) and Hutmatma factory Walwa (Sangli) and demanded that until the central government hikes the minimum support price (MSP) of sugar, they will not let the sugar mills to operate and will keep all the factories closed.
Issuing a warning to the mill owners and the administration on this occasion, Shetty said, "This year, farmers are fighting a street battle against unjust policies of the central government.
"If the minimum support price of sugar is increased, the millers themselves will benefit more than farmers in this battle. Therefore, all manufacturers should openly cooperate with this movement without succumbing to any political or government pressure. If anyone tries to keep the factories running, the factories will be entirely responsible for the severe losses," he adde. UNI SSS SS
