Scientists warn of possible strong El Niño threat to India in 2026-27

Pune, Sep 20 ( UNI) India could face heightened risks from a potentially strong El Niño event in 2026-27, with scientists warning that changes in Pacific Ocean temperatures could affect monsoon rainfall, heatwaves, water availability and ecosystems across the country.
More than 180 Indian environmental and climate researchers have called for closer monitoring and early preparations to assess the possible effects of an intensifying El Niño, according to a report released on Sept. 16. The scientists said strengthening monitoring systems before extreme climate events occur could help authorities better prepare for their potential impacts.
El Niño, a climate phenomenon associated with unusually warm sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, can influence weather patterns around the world. In India, El Niño events have historically been associated with changes in monsoon rainfall and increased heat risk, although the strength and effects of individual events can vary.
