Congress terms Nagpur MLC win a victory for democracy, Constitution

Nagpur, Oct 29 (UNI)The Congress has described its consecutive victory in the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency of the Maharashtra Legislative Council as a mandate in favour of democracy, the Constitution and the people’s voice.
Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari defeated BJP nominee Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes after an extensive counting process, retaining the seat for the party for a second consecutive term in a region considered a stronghold of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won three of the five Legislative Council seats contested in Maharashtra, while the BJP-led MahaYuti secured the remaining two.
Reacting to the outcome, Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal said the results had punctured what he termed the “illusionary bubble” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
In a post on X, Sapkal said Wanjari’s victory over the BJP candidate in Nagpur, which houses the RSS headquarters and is associated with Fadnavis and union Minister Nitin Gadkari, marked a significant setback for the ruling party.
He said the Congress had defeated the BJP in the constituency for the second successive time, adding that the MVA’s three-seat tally had dealt a major blow to the ruling alliance.
Despite the BJP-led alliance having access to power, money and resources, it had failed to secure a majority of the contested seats, he said.
Congress’s Maharashtra in-charge Sirivella Prasad also welcomed the results, asserting that financial strength and political power could not override the people’s mandate.
In his post on X, Prasad said the MVA’s victory in three of the five seats sent a strong message, particularly Wanjari’s win in Nagpur, which he described as a BJP stronghold.
He termed the outcome a victory for democracy, the Constitution and the voice of the people, while congratulating the Maharashtra Congress leadership, party leaders and workers in the Nagpur Graduates’ constituency, as well as alliance partners.
The RSS headquarters in Nagpur gives the city considerable ideological and organisational significance for the Sangh Parivar, making the Congress’s consecutive victories in the constituency politically significant.
With the Nagpur result, the Congress also opened its account in the by-elections held for 28 Legislative Council seats across Karnataka, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
