80-yr-old man's body kept in freezer for 4 yrs, family planned cryonics

Mumbai, Sep 30 (UNI) A shocking incident has come to light in Malad East where the body of an 80-year-old man was allegedly kept in a freezer at a polyclinic for nearly four years following his death in 2022.
The unusual discovery was made after residents complained of a foul smell emanating from the building, which reportedly intensified over time.
According to police, the elderly man died of natural causes in 2022. His family, however, was reportedly devastated by his sudden death and decided against performing his last rites.
After researching cryonics on the internet, they allegedly explored the possibility of preserving his body until future medical technology could potentially revive him.
Cryonics involves preserving a human body at extremely low temperatures, generally using liquid nitrogen at around minus 196 degrees Celsius. The family reportedly contacted a specialised organisation in the United States and began making arrangements, including completing the required formalities, to eventually transport the body to the US.
The cost of cryonics preservation in the US can reportedly range from around USD 28,000 to USD 45,000, equivalent to approximately Rs 25 lakh to Rs 40 lakh, depending on the services and preservation arrangements.
The body was allegedly kept in a specialised freezer at a clinic in Malad East. The clinic had reportedly remained closed for about a month due to renovation work.
Police said neither the principal owner of the clinic nor the local police had been informed about the presence of the body.
The matter came to light after local residents complained about the persistent foul odour. Police subsequently inspected the premises and discovered the body in the freezer.
Following the discovery, police recorded statements from the deceased man's family members, the clinic management and the owner of the premises. The Kurar police are now examining the legal aspects of keeping a human body in a freezer for several years without informing the authorities or obtaining the necessary permissions.
Police are also seeking legal advice from experts to determine whether the preservation of the body under these circumstances violated any existing laws.
