Mumbai software developer held for creating 2,805 malicious APKs linked to cyber frauds

Mumbai, Oct 6 (UNI) The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a 36-year-old software developer from Madhya Pradesh for allegedly creating and selling malicious APK files that were used by cybercrime gangs to defraud people across India.
Police said the accused created 2,805 fake APK files and sold them to cyber fraud gangs. Investigators found that the malicious files were allegedly linked to frauds involving around 9,673 people.
The investigation began after a senior citizen in Mumbai was allegedly cheated of Rs 5.62 lakh. According to police, the victim received an APK file named “Senior Citizen Card Verification” on WhatsApp from a fraudster posing as a Bank of India official. The malicious file was allegedly used to carry out the fraud
A technical investigation conducted by the Crime Branch eventually led investigators to the software developer in Madhya Pradesh. Police subsequently carried out a raid and seized a CPU, three hard disks, a pen drive, a Wi Fi router and three mobile phones.
Further investigation revealed that 1,074 complaints registered on the 1930 cybercrime helpline were linked to APK files allegedly created by the accused. These included 143 complaints from Maharashtra and 36 from Mumbai.
Police said 88 cases connected with the malicious APK files have so far been detected across India. Of these, eight were reported in Maharashtra, including five in Mumbai.
Investigators are now trying to identify and apprehend the cyber fraud gangs that allegedly purchased the malicious APK files from the accused and used them to cheat victims.
