IIT-B student Sahil Wakode’s death: Police probe allegations of torture, harassment

Mumbai, Sep 19 (UNI) Police have launched an investigation into the death of second-year IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode, who was found dead in his hostel room on Friday evening, police sources said today.
According to sources at Powai Police Station, the circumstances surrounding Wakode’s death are being investigated from various angles, including events that may have preceded the incident.
Meanwhile, Wakode’s mother approached the police on Saturday afternoon and alleged that her son had been subjected to torture and harassment, which she claimed had severely affected him and eventually driven him to take the extreme step.
The family said Wakode was pursuing his second year of studies in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. His death has raised questions over the circumstances leading up to the incident, with his mother seeking a thorough investigation into the alleged harassment.
Speaking to media persons after approaching the police, the bereaved mother alleged that her son had been tortured and subjected to continued harassment.
She urged the authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death and identify those responsible, if the allegations are found to be substantiated.
Police have taken cognisance of the allegations and are examining the matter as part of their investigation.
Statements of family members and other persons acquainted with the student are likely to be recorded, while investigators are expected to verify details relating to his academic and personal circumstances.
Police are expected to reconstruct the sequence of events preceding the incident as the investigation progresses.
Earlier on Friday, during an examination, the student was found to have a mobile phone in the examination hall. It is understood that the question paper had been uploaded to an AI chatbot to seek assistance.
The Institute said in a statement that no disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the student.
The matter had been discussed in person by the course instructor and the Head of Department, who counselled the student and provided assurance that the incident would not have an adverse bearing on his academic standing, the institute said.
