Maha: Congress' Wanjari retains Nagpur Graduates’ seat, defeats BJP’s Kohale by 3,271 votes

Nagpur, Oct 29 (UNI) Congress candidate and sitting MLC, Abhijeet Wanjari, has retained the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, defeating BJP nominee and former MLA Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes after a marathon counting process lasting over 40 hours.
Wanjari secured 67,231 votes against Kohale’s 63,960, with the counting exercise, which commenced on Tuesday morning, concluding in the early today.
The outcome marks a major setback for the BJP, as the party lost the prestigious seat in the home turf of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and union Minister Nitin Gadkari, both of whom had actively campaigned for Kohale.
Gadkari himself had represented the Nagpur Graduates’ constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Council for 24 years, from July 1990 to May 2014.
With Wanjari’s victory, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has secured three of the five seats contested in the MLC elections, while the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has won two.
After retaining the seat, Wanjari said the Nagpur Division Graduates' constituency was no longer a BJP stronghold but had become a bastion of the Congress and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
