MNS chief Raj Thackeray slams BJP over Gokul Dairy election and democracy protests

Mumbai, Nov 6 (UNI) Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of subverting democratic norms in the Gokul Dairy cooperative election even as it hypocritically holds "Save Democracy" demonstrations against the opposition.
In a hard-hitting social media post, Thackeray remarked that the BJP presents a unique case globally where a party wielding power from top to bottom takes to the streets to protest against opposition parties. He asserted that if the ruling party genuinely respected democratic values, it would not have arbitrarily nominated five government directors with voting rights to overturn the outcome of the Gokul Dairy elections in Kolhapur, where the panel led by Congress leader Satej Patil secured 13 seats against the BJP panel's 12.
Condemning the ruling party's conduct, the MNS leader said setting aside core principles simply after failing to win an election through secret ballot reveals a disregard for democratic processes. He further took a sharp swipe at the state's governance, commenting that Maharashtra is simultaneously witnessing a severe drought and what he termed a severe shortage of political understanding within the BJP.
Expressing concern over political precedents, Thackeray observed that after undermining democratic norms while in power, the ruling party might next hold rallies demanding protection against terrorism or economic distress caused under its own watch.
Calling for an end to political victimhood, the MNS chief concluded that after opposition parties secured the majority held by the BJP for 12 years, the ruling party must now learn to accept shifting public sentiments gracefully.
