Thane man dies of COVID-19, 500 active cases in Maha

Mumbai, Jun 2 (UNI) A 43-year-old resident of Thane district has died from complications linked to COVID-19, health authorities confirmed on Monday.
The victim, Vinit Kini, who lived in Khochivde village near Naigaon, was initially admitted to a private hospital in Vasai with fever and breathing difficulties.
After his condition deteriorated and he developed pneumonia, he was transferred to Raheja Hospital in Mahim, Mumbai, where he tested positive for COVID-19 and succumbed late on Friday night.
Municipal commissioner Anil Kumar Pawar reported that Kini’s body was taken directly to the Pachubunder crematorium, in line with safety protocols.
The local administration, led by Chief Medical officer Dr Bhakti Chaudhary, has urged residents to seek immediate testing if they experience symptoms, as concerns mount within the community.
Maharashtra has reported a total of eight COVID-related deaths and approximately 500 active cases statewide.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified preventive measures following a recent spike, including 20 new cases in the area. Authorities emphasise that most infections remain mild, with swift detection and isolation protocols in place.
In Thane, 87 tests were conducted, resulting in five new positive cases. The Thane Municipal Corporation now reports 108 cumulative cases, with 16 patients hospitalised and 32 recovering at home. In anticipation of further increases, the Maharashtra government is preparing a dedicated COVID ward at Thane Civil Hospital.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to remain vigilant while following recommended guidelines.
