Maharashtra sets up Public Relief Society to mobilise funds for critical illnesses, disaster relief

Mumbai, Nov 3 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has established the 'Maharashtra Public Relief Society' to mobilise additional funds for providing financial assistance to economically weaker sections affected by critical illnesses, natural calamities and other emergencies.
The initiative, conceived by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, will supplement the existing Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) by attracting contributions from corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, charitable organisations, philanthropic institutions and individual donors.
According to officials, the society aims to ease the financial burden of expensive medical treatment, including surgeries and prolonged care for patients suffering from heart diseases, cancer, kidney disorders, brain-related ailments and rare conditions.
The society will also extend assistance to victims of drought, severe accidents and natural disasters. Its activities will include distributing essential commodities to underprivileged people, supporting organisations working for persons with disabilities, and funding community health camps and public awareness programmes.
Rameshwar Naik, head of the CMRF and Charitable Hospital Aid Cell, said the initiative would provide a structured framework for collaboration between the government and private institutions.
It will bring together corporate bodies, donor agencies, non-governmental organisations and healthcare institutions as the state aims to expand the reach of its welfare programmes and ensure timely financial assistance to vulnerable people across Maharashtra, he said.
