Bombay HC to hear actor Imran Khan's plea on Oct 26, two days ahead of deportation deadline

Mumbai, Oct 19 (UNI) The Bombay High Court will hear actor Imran Khan's petition on October 26 challenging a Mumbai Police notice directing him to leave India by October 28 following his alleged involvement in a protest demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
The 43-year-old US citizen, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, has also received a show-cause notice from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office questioning why his Overseas Citizen of India status should not be revoked.
Senior counsel Venkatesh Dhond sought an urgent hearing before Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna on Monday.
Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, representing the union government, requested time after receiving the petition that morning. Despite Dhond citing the approaching departure deadline, the court fixed October 26 and directed Khan to include Maharashtra as a respondent.
Dhond maintained that Khan, who has lived in India since age two, had no criminal antecedents or pending cases. He said the actor never attended the demonstration but was detained midway and subsequently released.
Khan approached the court on October 17 through advocate Zulfiquar Memon and MZM Legal, describing the notice as illegal, arbitrary, disproportionate and contrary to natural justice.
He denied any connection with protest organisers and sought cancellation of the notice, interim protection and restraint against coercive action.
Police briefly detained Khan near August Kranti Maidan on October 10 during demonstrations supporting the Cockroach Janta Party's Delhi agitation over the Special Intensive Revision issue.
Authorities invoked Sections 7(2)(C) and 29 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act. The former permits restrictions on foreigners' presence, while the latter provides for removal following statutory violations or adverse security reports.
Police warned that failure to leave India by October 28 could trigger deportation proceedings. Khan's petition challenges that direction, while the separate immigration notice raises questions about his OCI status.
