Congress asks Fadnavis to seek withdrawal of Bishnoi’s protection

Mumbai , October 19 (UNI): Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Monday urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to demand the withdrawal of the legal protection allegedly granted to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, questioning the state government’s ability to tackle organised crime following the reported plot to murder actor Tiger Shroff.
Addressing a press conference, Sapkal claimed that an order issued by union Home Minister Amit Shah in August 2023 under Section 268 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) prevented police personnel from other states from taking Bishnoi out of Gujarat for questioning.
He said the order was renewed annually for one year and alleged that the arrangement allowed Bishnoi to orchestrate killings while lodged in jail.
Sapkal demanded that the Fadnavis government urge the Centre to withdraw the protection and ensure that Bishnoi could be brought to Mumbai for questioning.
“If an actor can be shot in broad daylight in Mumbai, is the police machinery sleeping?” Sapkal asked, alleging that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was behind the attack.
He also questioned whether the chief minister, who holds the home portfolio, had the resolve to act against the gangster and his associates.
Criticising the state’s law and order situation, Sapkal alleged that the Mumbai Police had lost its authority and was taking action mainly against opposition leaders and students, while criminal activities continued openly in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Nagpur.
He accused the Mahayuti government of failing to act against gangsters, extortion networks, drug mafias and sand mafias, and demanded its resignation.
The allegations made by the Congress leader were not independently verified.
