Police Denial May Prompt Contempt plea By Jarange Patil, says Lawyer

Mumbai, Sep 15 (UNI) Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil will move the Bombay High Court with a contempt petition if the police fail to grant permission for his proposed protest at Azad Maidan, his legal counsel and adviser, Advocate Ashishraje Gaikwad, said on Tuesday.
Gaikwad said the High Court’s September 11 order was clear it had declined to restrain Jarange Patil from proceeding with his march to Mumbai, observing that India is a democracy and the right to agitate is a democratic right.
“If the police refuse to grant permission despite the clear order of the High Court, we will approach the court with a contempt petition,” Gaikwad said.
Jarange Patil had earlier announced that he would commence an indefinite hunger strike in Mumbai from September 19. However, the police had denied permission for the proposed protest at Azad Maidan, citing security concerns.
Following the denial, Jarange Patil decided to proceed towards Mumbai and has now submitted a fresh application seeking permission to stage the hunger strike with 50 supporters, instead of the approximately 5,000 protesters proposed in his earlier application.
The revised application proposes a peaceful protest with a limited number of participants. Jarange Patil has assured the authorities that all conditions and regulations imposed by the police will be strictly followed.
The fresh application comes after the police rejected the earlier request on security grounds. Jarange Patil has maintained that he will proceed with his proposed hunger strike and has said he will challenge any further denial of permission before the court.
Gaikwad said the legal team would seek appropriate legal remedies if the police failed to grant permission despite the High Court’s observations.
