Contempt petition filed against Sanjay Raut for remarks against judiciary

Mumbai, Sep 30 (UNI) A criminal contempt petition has been filed in the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court against Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP and chief Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut, accusing him of making “inappropriate and objectionable” statements against the judiciary.
The petition, filed by advocate Amit Shrikant Deshpande through counsel Shailendra Gangakhedkar, alleges that Raut’s public remarks harmed the reputation of the judiciary.
According to the petition, Raut had allegedly stated that the judiciary is “corrupted,” claiming that only BJP leaders receive relief from courts, while the opposition is denied any such protection.
The statements were allegedly made in reaction to judicial developments following a High Court order.
A division bench of Justices Sandeep Kumar C More and Vaishali Patil-Jadhawar heard the petition and ordered notices to be issued to the respondents.
Besides Raut, other entities which broadcast the contentious statements have also been named as respondents.
Under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, the Advocate General’s consent is mandatory for initiating criminal contempt proceedings.
The petition was filed after Maharashtra Advocate General Dr Milind Sathe granted permission to advocate Amit Shrikant Deshpande to do so.
The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for October 22, 2026.
Over the past few months, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP and chief Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut has been highly critical of the judiciary in press conferences and public forums.
Raut had allegedly questioned the court’s role in a land scam case, expressed displeasure over delays in MLA disqualification cases, and accused the courts of working “under pressure from the central government” or behaving like “slaves” of the BJP government.
During the course of his interactions with media persons, Raut is alleged to have made very serious allegations against the judges of the Supreme and High Courts of India, including highly controversial statements that the word “dalaal” (broker or pimp) should be used as the prefix before the names of judges, instead of the official prefix ‘justice’, before their names.
Allegedly, Sanjay Raut also targeted some current and former judges of the Supreme Court.
The petition has brought these alleged remarks under legal scrutiny, seeking action for contempt of court.
Accordingly, the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court has issued a criminal contempt notice against Sanjay Raut for his alleged offensive and derogatory comments on the judiciary and judges in this case.
