SP MLA Rais Shaikh seeks minority advisor, member in Maharashtra UCC panel

Mumbai, Sept 30 (UNI) Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh has urged the Maharashtra government to appoint a minority-community advisor and member to the state’s Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee, saying diverse community perspectives should be represented in the process.
Shaikh raised the demand in a letter to Law and Judiciary Department Principal Secretary Swapnil Khati as he referred to the government's appointment of retired IAS officer Shatrughna Singh as an advisor to the UCC Committee, he said a suitably qualified person from a minority community should also be appointed as an advisor.
According to Shaikh, such representation would help ensure that issues relating to personal laws, family matters and the practical implications of the proposed UCC are adequately considered during the drafting and consultation process.Shaikh also pointed to the vacancy created by the resignation of Justice (Retd) R C Chavan from the committee and reiterated his demand that the position be filled by a suitably qualified person from a minority community, particularly the Muslim community.
He said the proposed UCC could have a direct bearing on personal and family matters, including marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, and argued that the drafting and consultation process should take into account the experiences and concerns of Maharashtra’s diverse communities.
The SP MLA had made the similar demand in a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis last week.
According to Shaikh, appointing minority representatives as both an advisor and a committee member would make the UCC process more broad-based, inclusive and transparent.
Shaikh also called for an open consultation process before the committee finalises its recommendations, saying all sections of society should have an opportunity to present their views. He proposed consultations with minority communities, women, legal experts, religious and social organisations, civil society groups and members of the public.
