Maha: SP MLA Shaikh flags 3-year delay in Waqf land records review, seeks action from Sunetra Pawar

Mumbai, Oct 27 (UNI) Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh has urged Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Minority Development Minister Sunetra Pawar to expedite a long-pending review of land records pertaining to Waqf properties, alleging that the state government has failed to address issues affecting the Muslim community.
In a letter to Ms Pawar, the Bhiwandi East legislator said a four-member committee constituted by the Minority Development Department on October 17, 2023, to examine land records and frame a policy for the disbursement of land acquisition compensation had failed to submit its report, despite being given a one-month deadline.
Shaikh said Maharashtra has 23,566 registered Waqf properties spread across approximately 92,247 acres. He noted that several properties had allegedly been encroached upon, while ownership claims by private individuals had further complicated matters.
The issue was discussed at a meeting held on September 21, 2023, under the chairmanship of then Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The meeting considered reviewing entries in the 7/12 land extracts of Waqf properties, removing the names of private individuals from the records where warranted, recording the names of the concerned Waqf institutions and the Maharashtra State Board of Waqf, and formulating a policy for distributing land acquisition compensation.
Following the meeting, the department constituted the committee and directed it to submit its findings within a month. However, the report remains pending, Shaikh said, questioning the delay in implementing the government's own directives.
He demanded that the department explain the reasons for the delay and fix accountability for the failure to meet the prescribed deadline.
Shaikh also said issues concerning Waqf properties, which had been taken up during Ajit Pawar's tenure, should continue to receive government attention. He expressed concern that several issues affecting the Muslim community remained unresolved and questioned whether these concerns were being accorded adequate priority by the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the state government.
Emphasising the implications for property rights and the financial interests of Waqf institutions, Shaikh called for time-bound decisions on the correction of land records and the disbursement of compensation.
He urged the government to move beyond assurances and ensure concrete action to resolve the matter.
