Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana launches 'Chavni Andolan' to stop sugarcane transport to factories

Kolhapur, Oct 27 (UNI) Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana(SSS) national president and former MP Raju Shetty announced the launch of 'Chavani Andolan' (camp protests) from today at different places of the district to stop transport vehicles from supplying sugarcane to sugar factories for crushing as the first installment had not been announced of Rs 4,500 per tonne sugarcane this year.
Accusing the sugar millers of violating the law by starting the crushing season without announcing the first harvest of sugarcane, Shetty said that SSS has decided to start a 'cantonment' movement from today.
Farmers' cantonments will be set up on the main roads in the area where sugar factories are operating and will block the transport of sugarcane and not a single trolley or truck loaded with sugarcane will be allowed to go towards the factory.
A meeting of the key office bearers of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana of Sangli and Kolhapur districts was held at Herle (Tal. Hatkanangale).
The future direction of the movement was decided in the meeting.
"It is unfair to start the crushing season without maintaining transparency in determining the price of sugarcane to farmers. The self-respecting farmers' organization will never tolerate this policy of sugar millers", he said.

He appealed to farmers to participate in the camp in every factory area for this protest.
The meeting expressed the view that activists, office bearers and sugarcane farmers from Sangli and Kolhapur districts should actively participate in the protest.
He clarified that there is no question of withdrawing the agitation until the first hike is announced and a satisfactory solution is found to the farmers' demands.
It was also decided to intensify the agitation until the sugarcane price issue is resolved.
