Ex-Maha CM Chavan seeks probe into ECI functioning, removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Mumbai, Sep 27 (UNI) Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan today called for an inquiry into the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and sought the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In a post on micro-blogging site X, he referred to a report published by The Indian Express concerning the functioning of the poll panel and said the matter required a detailed investigation. He also urged that proceedings be initiated for Kumar's removal.
Chavan further said ECI is a constitutional body established under Article 324 of the Constitution and referred to the Supreme Court's 1995 judgment in the T.N. Seshan versus union of India case on the role and powers of Election Commissioners.
Referring to the newspaper report, the Congress leader alleged that decisions were being taken by the Chief Election Commissioner without consulting the other members of the Commission. He questioned whether such decisions were being taken collectively as required under the law.
The ECI has maintained that differences of opinion and observations are part of institutional deliberations and that its decisions were taken unanimously.
Chavan said the Supreme Court should, if necessary, take suo motu cognisance of the matter and examine the functioning of the Election Commission. He also urged Opposition parties to initiate proceedings under the constitutional provisions for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner.
He further called for an immediate meeting of INDIA bloc leaders and suggested that a delegation led by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi meet the President to seek action against the CEC.
"Election management is a serious issue and if elections are managed, there is no meaning to democracy," Chavan added, while reiterating his demand for action against Kumar. UNI SP SSS SS
